The E&H baseball team has hired a new assistant coach, primarily to work with pitchers and recruitment, to the staff this year.

After spending stints at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Kyle Cliff joins coaches Trey McCall and John Kuczko in leading the Wasps through the 2022 season.

Michael Owen, a senior pitcher, has noticed changes in confidence and pitching skills in the whole pitching staff since Cliff joined the team.

Owen said, “Cliff has elevated our whole team onto a new level where I really see us doing something. A combination of added velocity on pitches and a greater pitching repertoire has made our pitching staff much more dominant.”

Team members say Cliff’s impact goes beyond just the pitchers of the team.

Nathan Treadway, a senior catcher, said, “Coach Cliff has forced the players on our team to hold themselves accountable and really buy in into the program from lifts, to practices, to classes. As a senior, it is a huge difference to the Wasps of the past.”

Cliff was hired to assist a pitching staff that was 7th in ERA, 11th in strikeouts, and 2nd in walks.

“I look forward to the transition to the Division II level with the guys on our team and the challenges that lay in front of us and seeing a group of guys come together for one common goal of competing for conference championships,” Cliff said.

Cliff credits the coaches of his past for influencing him to become a college baseball coach.

“The impact coaches had on me growing up made me realize what an important role coach can have on a young man’s life and I wanted to be that bright light for the players I interact with on a daily basis,” Cliff said.

As Emory & Henry transitions to the Division II level, Cliff intends to be an instrumental part of the Wasp’s success.

“I look forward to bringing the philosophy of trying to help develop players both on and off the field. Using the lessons on the baseball field to teach how to become a better man in life outside of baseball,” Cliff said.
