Emory & Henry College’s Office of Housing & Residence Life is working to provide student-focused programming for students on campus and students learning remotely from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Office of Housing & Residence Life provides student programming throughout each school year, and developed the Weekends at EHC program for the fall 2020 semester.

Weekends at EHC activities include cornhole competitions and different residence hall programs every Friday, cardio club and mystery movie nights every Saturday, and morning worship and sports showcases every Sunday.

Cornhole tourney is held every Friday at 5 p.m. on the Village Townhouse lawn. Students can visit the E&H website and calendar for more information of the residence hall programming.

Mystery movie nights are held every Saturday at 8 p.m. on the Hickory and Elm residence hall lawn. The residence life staff will provide free popcorn to any students who come to watch one of 10 potential mystery movies on a 33 foot movie screen.

The Sunday Sports Showcase will also be held at 8 p.m. on the Hickory and Elm residence hall lawn area. Professional league, Sunday night football, will be projected on the 33 ft screen.

For all viewing events, movies or sports, markers will be placed where people can sit to ensure social distancing.

While the viewing events are only available for students living on and around campus, the cardio club is a virtual activity for both students on and off campus.

The cardio club is an opportunity for students that like to run, walk, or bike on campus. Students need to download the “Strava” app, go to “clubs”, and search “Emory & Henry” to join the club. The residence life staff chose this app because it tracks where you exercise and creates a virtual community that allows you to see where other people have gone while they exercise.

There are also special programs happening throughout the semester for virtual students. E&H professor William Adamson is hosting an interest session on assembling and painting gaming miniatures through Zoom on Saturday, Sept. 19. There is also a virtual pet show planned for Monday, Sept. 21 where students can show off their cats, dogs and any other pets through Zoom.

Assistant director for campus life Dylan Johnson helped design the program. “With all the changes that have occurred going into this school year, we wanted to ensure that students still had the opportunity to participate in programming, regardless if they were on campus or working remotely from home,” he said. “The big push was to have more events on the weekend for our students to stay connected.”

Johnson said the residence life staff found the ideas for weekly movie nights and sports showcases by asking students what they would be interested to have on campus. The staff also reached out to other faculty members on campus and asked them if they’d be interested in “Adopting a Weekend” to help in programming efforts.

Special weekend events coming up in September are a drum circle and the E&H kindness campaign. The drum circle was originally scheduled for Friday, September 18 at the Duck Pond. The event has been postponed due to weather, but interested students must email Professor Davis and Professor Sorenson to register as the event is limited to 25 people to ensure social distancing.

Johnson believes the Weekends at EHC programming is important to the college experience, especially for students that are working remotely from home. “These events are truly what helps a student feel at ‘home’ here at Emory & Henry. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it is even more important now in my opinion that these opportunities are available to students in order for them to feel connected to E&H,” he said.
