The Emory & Henry College Softball Team picked up three wins at the E&H Invitational this past weekend. The Wasps were victorious on Saturday over Susquehanna University 9-5 and Marietta College 7-6.
E&H playing as the visitor, opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first. Senior first baseman Caley Hodge got things started with a RBI double to centerfield. Senior shortstop Leah Elswick hit a two-run triple to push the lead to 5-0 in the third inning. Sophomore third baseman Courtney Herron hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to increase the margin to 6-0. The Riverhawks answered with two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth innings to close the gap to 6-5. The Wasps scored once in the sixth inning and twice in the top of the seventh inning, thanks to junior right fielder Madison McClanahan and freshman designated player Kendall Varner. Tiffany Cole earned the win, with only one earned run on eight hits and five strikeouts in four innings. Freshman Alex Braun, picked up the save in the final 2 innings.
In game two, E&H played Marietta College. The Pioneers put up three runs in the top of the first inning. The Wasps stormed back 3-2 with a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the inning. E&H took the lead in the third 4-3, but the Pioneers answered back in the fifth with three more runs to go up 6-4. The Wasps answered with a single by Elswick in the fifth to make it 6-5. In the bottom of the seventh, the Wasps won the game with a walk off two- run double courtesy of sophomore catcher Alex Thomas. Freshman Cameron Derr earned the win, scattering four earned runs and nine strikeouts.
On Sunday, the Wasps split their pair of games. E&H fell short in the first game against Case Western Reserve University 5-3. However, the Wasps bounced back once against Marietta College 8-5. E&H finished the weekend 3-1 and improved to 8-2 overall.
The Wasps then finished spring break going undefeated with an 8-o record to improve their overall record at 16-2. With the hot start, E&H has now received some votes for the top 25 poll. The Wasps will face Covenant before they begin conference play against Roanoke College.
