“We will not stop offenses, we will attack them” said Tommy Buzzo, Emory & Henry’s new defensive coordinator. Buzzo is a native of Bluefield, West Virginia. Buzzo joins Emory & Henry after spending the past four seasons at Brooke Point High School in Stafford, VA in which he led the Blackhawks to the VHSL 5A State Playoffs in all four seasons. Buzzo spent some time on the playing field as well. He played linebacker and defensive end for Concord University in West Virginia, also spent some time playing semi-pro with the Roanoke Rush.“I’m an old cat, and I have studied the game a lot” With an impressive resume Buzzo looks to bring all that experience and knowledge to a defense that has been struggling in recent years.
Buzzo is bringing new light to the Emory & Henry defense after a struggling season last year with the wasps going 3-7 and finishing last in the ODAC. According to odaconline.com the defense gave up 34.8 points per game and finished last in the conference in interceptions with five. “We are really buying into what Coach Buzzo is teaching us” said Justin Banks a senior defensive back for the wasps “The energy just feels better and players are fired up.” One thing that will help Buzzo out, is the experience and senior leadership he will have on the defensive side.
The new defensive look behind buzzo will have a big test with the first game of the season vs. Ferrum College who is now apart of the ODAC, which adds a little more excitement to the series. There is a new tradition with the series now. The game is titled the crooked road classic and a trophy is on the line, in which the panthers have won both seasons since the trophy was presented. The wasps defense will look to help bring that trophy back to Emory & Henry.
“Im fired up and ready to go” Buzzo said.
