The Emory & Henry women’s basketball team fell just short of the ODAC tournament championship, falling to #2 seed Randolph Macon by a final score of 72-68. The lost snapped the Wasps 11 game win streak.

The Yellow Jackets opened the game on a 6-2 run and eventually pushed the lead to 23-11 near the end of the first quarter. The Wasps battled back, going on a 9-2 run and cutting the RM lead to 25-20 at the end of the first quarter. E&H’s run continued, pushing it at a 17-4 advantage to give the Wasps their first lead of the game at 28-27 in the second quarter. It was back and forth from there for both squads, having a total of six lead changes in the second quarter, with the Yellow Jackets holding a slight lead at 39-38.

The second half saw the Yellow Jackets stretch the lead to 43-40, but the Wasps bounced back with an 8-1 run to retake the lead, 48-44. The third quarter, much like the second, had multiple lead changes. A total of three ties and seven lead changes put the contest at 58-57 in favor of E&H with only one quarter remaining for the championship.

The Yellow Jackets started the fourth with a 9-2 run to retake the lead and ended up with a six point lead with 2:56 left to play. The Wasps answered with a 6-0 run with 54 seconds left to play. The Yellow Jackets would convert on their next possession and hold a two point lead with 24 seconds left. The Wasps had multiple chances to tie or take the lead in the final seconds, but couldn’t convert. The leading scorer for both squads was sophomore forward, Kelly Williams, who had 31 points and 20 rebounds. She recorded a double-double in the first half alone.

Despite the lost, the Wasps still earned their first bid to pay in the NCAA division three tournament in program history. E&H will travel Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and face Roger Williams University from Bristol, Rhode Island.
