The Emory & Henry College Softball Team split its doubleheader with Meredith College on Saturday. Despite losing their first game, the Wasps came back to win their second game 7-0 thanks to freshman pitcher Cameron Derr’s efforts on the mound.

Derr threw a no-hitter striking out eleven batters. This was the first no-hitter by an Emory & Henry pitcher since 2013.

Softball has always been a part for the Derr family.  Derr’s mother played softball at Eastern Carolina University. Derr fell in love with the game at age 10 and wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

Derr is a native of Cornelius, North Carolina. Derr decided to come to E&H for many reasons. “I decided to come here, because I really liked the coaches and what the school has to offer. I also saw how close knit the team was.”

As for the softball team, they are Derr’s home away from home. Derr says her strength to softball is pitching. “ I like to live hard on the inside corner and finish up in the strike zone with a rise ball in on the hands.”

Derr is majoring in Mass Communications. She plans to go into sports broadcasting, in hope to cover football.

Derr’s personal goals while on the mound for the Wasps are to win a ring. “ I want to be able to help the team in the circle and win a ring for the seniors.”
