With new team goals, players, pitchers, and an additional coach, the Emory & Henry Softball Team is ready for this year’s upcoming softball season.

There are seven freshmen on the 2018 roster. Three of the four pitchers on the team are freshmen. “They bring a strong force to the circle”, said senior captain Leah Elswick.
The team is young this year, with only two senior leaders. “There are a lot of people facing new situations and team members not knowing what it is like to play in the ODAC.

Practices are more intense in part because of this”, said senior captain Caley Hodge.
Every year, before the new season starts, the current team creates a list of goals together that they wish to achieve. “The players make the goals and the coaches help the players try to achieve them”, said Head Coach Tommy Forrester. One of this year’s goals includes lessening the strikeouts compared to last year. During the 2017 softball season, the team had a total of 170 strikeouts. This year, the team set a goal of less than 150 strikeouts.

Junior captain, Erin Anderson, said “A significant change that I would like to see from last year is producing more runs.” The Wasps struggled a little with that last season and they expect improvements this season.

Other team goals include winning the ODAC and making it to super regionals. Last year, the team came very close, placing second in the ODAC. They also made it to regionals for the first time since 2003.

In addition to new team members, senior leaders, and goals, a new coach, Jason Delp, has been added to the staff. Coach Delp is the former softball coach at Abingdon High School. Assistant Coach, Jenae Morrissey said, “He does a tremendous job with our hitters. I can already see they have gotten better.”

Some of the key games to look forward to this season include Virginia Wesleyan, Lynchburg, Guilford, and Randolph Macon. “We always seem to play Virginia Wesleyan hard, so I look forward to playing them”, said Hodge.
