After a long break between tournaments, the Emory & Henry women’s golf team traveled to Buena Vista, Virginia, to participate in the Knight Invitational hosted by Southern Virginia at Vista Links Golf Course. In the field of four teams, the Wasps took second place with a score of 464.
Sophomore Ashley Underwood led the way for the Wasps, carding a round of 100, finishing in 4th place, and she was named to the all-tournament team that day. Underwood did not expect to finish this high, as she said, “I was kind of shocked honestly. I was super excited that I was able to finish in the top five at a college tournament which is something that I would’ve never thought I could actually do.” First-year Chandler Thomas and Sierra Giramma both tied for 8th place,carding a round of 114 each. Junior Laura Mister finished in 14th place with a round of 136.
Host team Southern Virginia won the event with a team score of 387, and Bailey Rusick of SVU took home medalist honors with a score of 87. Sweet Briar finished in 3rd with a score of 541, and Hollins did not have a full team to be counted to- wards the team leaderboard.
After the tournament, Underwood said, “As a team I feel like we did better than we had expected and we now know what we need to work on for the next tournament.”
The next tournament will be the final tournament of the fall for the Wasps, as they will host the E&H Women’s Fall classic. The tournament will take place on October 21 at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon. Thomas is looking forward to the event, “I think after the last tournament, we are coming into this tournament with a more competitive and focused attitude,” she said.
After this tournament, the Wasps will be entering their offseason until the spring. “The off-season is going to be a huge building season for us. We’re going to be taking advantage of our indoor practice facility as well as the weight room in order to come back stronger in the spring season,” said Thomas.
This is the first official season that E&H has competed in women’s golf, as they look to win their first event
