The Emory & Henry golf team looked to defy odds at the start of the 2017 season. At the start of the season the Wasps were projected to finish ninth in the conference by the coaches poll. March 13-14, the Wasps competed at the TaylorMade/Adidas Intercollegiate tournament in St. Helena Island, South Carolina.
After one day of play and 36 holes, E&H finished two rounds of golf in seventh place out of the field of 13. Out of the 86 man field, the Wasps placed two in the top 20 for the tournament.
E&H were lead by first-year Carlos Andrade who shot a 78 (+6) and then bettered his score to shoot a 74 (+2) on the next 18 holes. Sophomore Ryan Hyatt shot a 77 (+5) on the first 18 and replicated the same score on the final 18. Both finished in theta 20 golfers in the tournament. First-year Richard Fishwick shot third best on the team with a 81(+9) and finished with a total 169 (+25).
The Wasps finished the tournament falling one spot and finishing 8 out of 13 teams. E&H then finished sixth as a team on the final 18 holes. Andrade dazzled for the Wasps and shot a 73 (+1) and shot a (+9) for the tournament.
Hyatt struggled on the final day of the tournament and shot a 85 (+13). Andrade finished tied for fourth out of 85 while Hyatt fell out of the top 20 to 28th.
The Wasps now look to improve at the Tusculum Invitational on March 25-26. Emory & Henry will travel to Greenville, Tennessee.
