Men’s Golf Team Falls to Bluefield over Weekend

The Emory & Henry College Men’s Golf team began their season on March 4 at an exhibition against Bluefield College and Bluefield State College with a match-play type tournament that was played at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon.

The exhibition featured a unique format. The event featured three sections of nine holes each, two of which were played in pairs and a third of which was singles. All three sections of the event were played in a match-play style. The first section was played in a best ball format, seeing the Wasps take a commanding lead. E&H took a 4.5-.5 lead after the first section, scoring points in all five of the matches. First-year Carlos Andrade and senior T.J. Widener won by a score of 4.5-.5.

The second section was played as an alternate shot competition. Bluefield College and Bluefield State College closed the gap to 5.5-4.5 after this second section of competition by winning three matches and halving the other two with the Wasps.

Andrade and Widener halved their match. Likewise, first-years Ben Owen and Richard Fishwick earned the same result, giving the Wasps half a point.

The third and final section was competed via singles events, having concluded all of the pairings. Bluefield College and Bluefield State College earned a comeback victory in the third section. The two Bluefield schools won seven of the matches outright. They went on to halve two more matches, giving them an 8-2 section score and a 12.5-7.5 win overall. Hyatt and Owen halved their matches. Bluefield State’s T.J. Lester, who again played for the Wasps to create equal numbers, won his match. In a day that was full of unusual and unique circumstances, the only match won for the E&H team was won by a non-Wasp.The E&H Men’s Golf Team will play in their first official spring tournament on Monday, March 13 and Tuesday, March 14. This tournament is called the TaylorMade/Adidas Intercollegiate, and will be hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. The tournament will take place at the Cotton Dike Course at the Dataw Island Club in St. Helena Island, SC.
