Last Sunday, during a gloomy afternoon on the courts, the Emory & Henry College men’s tennis team lost in their first match of the spring season to Ferrum College. The Wasps fell 7-2, winning only two matches.
Seniors Kamil Aliev and Luke Funkhouser fell 8-3 at one doubles while senior John Dalton Ferguson and first-year Grayson McCarty faced a tough matchup at two doubles, but fought hard and the pair came out on top 9-7. First-years Dalton Shipley and Cooper Garrett also lost, 8-3, at three doubles.
Victory was not in favor of the Wasps’ as single play produced a lone win. Ferguson won an exciting match at one singles, 7-5, 6-2. Ferguson fought back, as he was down 5-2 in the first set, to win 5 straight games. Kamil Aliev fell, 7-5, 6-2, at two singles. In an unfortunate turn of events, McCarty was shut out, 6-0, 6-0 at three singles. Funkhouser was also defeated in a very close match, 6-2, 7-5, at four singles. Shipley went down, 6-1, 6-2, at five singles, and Garrett was not able to earn a victory after losing, 6-4, 6-1, at six singles.
The Wasps’ next match will be on the road at Milligan College on Sunday, Feb. 26.
