Equestrian Teams Trot By Competition

EMORY– The Emory & Henry College IHSA Team continued their winning streak this past weekend. At the Emory & Henry Equestrian Center, the Wasps finished first with 45 points and were able to beat out Virginia Tech after a VT team member’s disqualification.

The team, under the leadership of the four seniors, Nick Martino, Odessa Thacker, Victoria Lustig, and Allison Smith were able to get their third straight victory.

The Wasps won 11 sections of competition and finished second in three other sections. Martino and sophomore Francisco Caba-Guil both placed first in Open Equitation Flat and Open Over Fences, while junior Sydney Casady finished third.

On Intermediate on Flat, junior Jane Mikusa placed first, while her teammate junior Billie Henard placed fourth.

In Intermediate Over Fences, first-year Maddie Bonner placed first and first year Kira Boerst finished fourth. In Novice on Flat, first-year Carlet Gunnell and Katie Maharis finished first while Bonner finished third.

Novice Equitation Over Fences, Thacker finished first with Henard was second and Mikusa earned fourth.

Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, Lustig earned first while junior Galen Reyes second, and first-year Cara Brooks placed third.

E&H placed first over Averett University in second, and Virginia Tech in third place. The Intermont Equestrian IHSA Team looks ahead to Virginia Tech for another double header on Feb. 18, next Saturday.

The Wasps look to make it a fourth consecutive win, looking ahead to the national competition. The team will look to the Senior leadership and also look to the spark that first years on the team, have supplied this season.
