Wasps Still Have Chance at ODAC Championship

The Emory & Henry College Football Team rushed for 273 yards and intercepted three passes in pursuit of a 38-27 win over The Catholic University of America Saturday in an ODAC home game. The victory makes it four-straight conference wins for the Wasps for the first time since the 2000 season.
Catholic scored the ball first as Matt Perno darted in from a yard out at the 9:23 mark of the 1st quarter. The score capped an eight-play, 68-yard drive. Following this, sophomore running back Sam Wagner tied things up for the Wasps with a five-yard plunge for a touchdown.
With the momentum in their favor, E&H took its first lead of the game, 14-7, early in the second quarter as junior quarterback Kevin Saxton hit senior wide receiver A.J. Hampton in the back of the end zone.
Catholic then made a push with a 92-yard return by Nick Esposito on the ensuing kickoff knotted the score at 14 points apiece.
With the Cardinals on the verge of taking the lead, senior cornerback Tre’von Lightfoot intercepted a pass deep in the end zone and returned it all the way for a momentous touchdown and a 21-14 lead which would stay put as half time ensued.
Right out of the gate, the Wasps brought the sting to the Cardinals. The Wasps scored 10 points to create the largest lead of the game, 31-14. Sophomore quarterback Dominic Dunnaville connected with sophomore wideout Chris Gannon for a six-yard score while sophomore Wes Blaylock converted a 19-yard field goal to keep the Wasps rolling.
Catholic gained 68 yards in 10 plays finalized by a 10-yard touchdown by Lucas Morley from Jorge Pola to make the score 31-20.
With nearly 10 minutes left in the game, Dunnaville located first-year wide receiver Derrick Yates in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown and bolstered a 38-20 advantage.
A dazzling 100-yard interception return by Chauncey Wallace kept the Cardinals’ hopes high, but after forcing the Wasps to punt on their next possession, an E&H interception sealed the deal for the 38-27 final score.
E&H will play its final game of the regular season this upcoming Saturday as it hosts rival Guilford College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The game will also serve as Senior Day for the Wasps, who will honor the senior members of the team prior to kickoff.
