This past week, the Emory & Henry College women’s soccer team received the news that head coach Linda Schirmeister-Gess would be stepping down. Gess will continue her duties through November until leaving for her new job as the Director of Development with Strive, which was formerly known as the Sportschallenge Leadership Academy.
The resignation came as a shock to many. Athletic Director Myra Sims commented, “I was very sorry to learn of Linda’s resignation because her family leaving is a loss to the entire E&H community. She has done an outstanding job in changing the culture within the women’s soccer program, and has been a great mentor and leader for the young women on the team. She has been a positive and valued colleague within our athletics department as well.”
Gess, who led E&H’s Women’s Team for five seasons, saw three players named to All-ODAC Teams. On top of that, Gess saw 39 players named to the ODAC All-Academic Team through her first four seasons. When asked to comment on her resignation, Coach Gess responded by saying “It has been an honor and a privilege being the head coach here for the past five seasons. I have been blessed to be able to work with some incredible young women and within a wonderful department. I have formed so many life-long bonds and will forever be grateful for the opportunity I was given here. I am excited to now be this team’s biggest fan and watch them grow and succeed on and off the field.”
Coach Linda Schirmeister-Gess will leave the team as the second-most winningest coach in school history overall as well as against ODAC competition. A national search for the next head coach has already begun.
