Women’s XC Exceeds Preseason Expectations

On Saturday, the women’s cross country team traveled to Buena Vista, VA to race in the conference championship at Buena Vista Links Golf Course, hosted by Washington and Lee University. Before the season started, Emory & Henry was picked to finish 10th in the ODAC preseason poll. At the ODAC preview earlier this year, E&H took 9th place out of 12 teams on the same track. This time, the Wasps took 8th place out of 11 competing teams.
E&H came in 8th place, with a team score of 229, and an overall time of 2:20:10, and an average of 28:02 per runner. First-year Erica Grupp led the way for the Wasps, coming in 30th place overall, a time of 25:31.9, and an average mile of 6:50.7. Senior Elizabeth Wilson was the second runner to finish for E&H, coming in 32nd place overall, and posted a time of 25:37.0. Her average mile time was 6:52.7. The third E&H runner to cross the finish line was Sophomore McKenna Tankersley, who came in 66th place, and finished with a time of 29:10.1, and had an average mile of 7:47.4. First-year Maddie Copenhaver was the next Wasp to finish the race, coming in 69th place, had a time of 29:32.2, and an average mile of 7:55.1. The next Wasp to finish the race was Sophomore Taylor Henderson, who came in 71st place, had a time of 30:18.5, and had an average mile of 8:07.5.
The Washington & Lee Generals men’s and women’s cross country teams took both the men’s and women’s team titles at Buena Vista Links Golf Course. The women’s team from W&L had a score of 32, a total time of 2:13:00, and averaged 26:36 per runner. The individual champion was Roanoke Senior Kerri Dalton, who had a time of 22:39.1, and an average mile of 6:04.4. Dalton also was named the ODAC Runner of the Year.
The top 14 runners in this race earned all-ODAC honors. The honorees were Senior Kerri Dalton from Roanoke, Samantha Yates from W&L, Sophomore Margaret Seyboid from W&L, Senior Claire Brooks from Roanoke, Sophomore Morgan Alvis from Lynchburg, Samantha Schreiber from Lynchburg, Junior Marissa Coombs from Virginia Wesleyan, Kristen McMichael from W&L, Senior Shelby Shrader from Shenandoah, Junior Sommer Fanney from Gulilford, first-year Julia Moody from W&L, first-year Emily Miller from Shenandoah, Megan Good from Eastern Mennonite, and first-year Katie Bearup from W&L.
Up next for the Wasps of E&H, they will travel to the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Championships in Mount Berry, GA. This year, the race will be hosted by Berry College.
