If I have learned one thing in my time at Emory & Henry, it is that sometimes our weekend plans fall short of our expectations. I find that many of my fellow classmates have a hard time making weekend plans that help us get away from academia and take us out of the academic setting. In my own opinion, most of the enjoyable events I attend happen off campus. If you have the ability to get off campus, here are a few ideas on what you can do on your weekends:
Within 20 minutes:
- The Abingdon Farmers Market: This market takes place every Saturday from 8am-1pm (up until Thanksgiving) and features many local vendors offering different items like produce, cold-pressed juices, pastries, crafts, soaps and many other locally produced items. The majority of the market is also covered, so you can take on the market rain or shine. For more information visit: www.abingdonfarmersmarket.com
- Downtown Abingdon: Main Street Abingdon features many local businesses that house antiques, desserts, and specialty items. This is definitely a great place to walk the streets on a beautiful Saturday. Remember that most shops are often closed on Sundays.
Within 30 minutes:
- The Pinnacle: Do you need some retail therapy? Are you hungry? The Pinnacle is one of the newest shopping centers the area has to offer. Located right off of exit 74B on interstate 81, you are sure to find a few shops and eateries that interest you. The center also features a movie theatre if you’re interested in seeing a film after your meal. the Pinnacle also has recently announced that they will be adding on an outlet mall to cover even more ground. The shopping center is open year-round. For all store hours visit their website: www.thepinnacle.com
- Blackbird Bakery: My personal favorite, Blackbird Bakery, is open 24/7 Monday-Saturday. The bakery offers an amazing selection of sweets ranging from doughnuts to cheesecakes to brownie towers. The bakery also has occasional live music and offers a 10% discount for students. For more information on Blackbird visit their website: www.blackbirdbakerybristol.com
