The Emory & Henry College women’s cross country team is looking forward to a promising season under new coach Ian Layne. After spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Piedmont College, Coach Layne brings several years of experience and a new coaching style to the Lady Wasps this fall.
Women’s cross country is welcoming three freshman runners to accompany the veteran team members, four sophomores, and one senior. Picked to finish 10th in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, the women’s team began their season on Thursday, September 2nd. They competed at the Roanoke Time Trials in Salem, Virginia.
Teams of two from both Emory & Henry and Roanoke College, respectively, were chosen to race in this meet. Senior Elizabeth Wilson and freshman Erica Grupp led the Lady Wasps to fourth place in a time of 37:34 in the 9,600 meter course. Sophomore Taylor Henderson teamed up with freshman Michelle Gentry with a time of 41:15, while sophomore Kelly Light and freshman Maddie Copenhaver finished the course with a time of 41:43.
The final score was 15-6, favoring Roanoke College. However, the Emory & Henry women’s cross country team will once again race this Friday in the ODAC preview in Buena Vista, Virginia.
